蘇美人 首創六十進制，
提出「數字的值由其位置決定」的概念。

吃完早餐回來唸英文，沒人提昨天發生的事，但我們倆心知肚明，於是今天唸到不懂處，他自己會停下來問，比如：flatterd是什麼意思？

Mr.Z 想知道 Greg 和 Maura 兩個人到底發生了什麼事：「Tell me precisely what started that mess ?」

在兩人各自表述後，發現問題出在 Greg 認為 Maura 「偷」了他的「點子」。

看了 Greg 和 Maura 兩個人的小畫冊後，Mr.Z 不認為 Muara 有「偷」任何東西，這是兩本完全不同的書，無論內容或畫風，而且「圖畫書」這種點子也並非專屬於 Greg。為了說明「點子」是什麼，Mr. Z 用他熟悉的數學舉了以下的例子：

In mathematics the Sumerians were the first to use the idea of place value-over five thousand years ago. But they do not own that idea. And when you sit here in my room adding large numbers, and you carry tens or hundreds over into the next place column, does a Sumerian come running into the room and say, 'Hey-quit it! That's my idea!'

唸到「Sumerians」時，他問什麼意思？我先問他詞性，他說是名詞。那是地名？人名？還是？他搖搖頭。我問什麼樣的名詞會需要首字母大寫？雖然還是不清楚，但我們得到一個結論：它是一個專有名詞。

之後「place value」也停下來問這是什麼意思？我也不知道，先繼續唸下去再回頭看是什麼意思。

整段唸完後，他還是不懂。我也不懂，沒關係，那就這段再讀一次，這次一次一句：

In mathematics the Sumerians were the first to use the idea of place value-over five thousand years ago. 

在數學裡， Sumerians 是第一個用 place value 這個點子的，早在五千年前。

 But they do not own that idea.

但這點子不是他們的。 

And when you sit here in my room adding large numbers,

但當你坐在我的教室做大數加法時，

and you carry tens or hundreds over into the next place column,

你把數十或數百加到下一 ⋯⋯「位數」 

一句一句地推進到這裡時，基於他學過數學、學過加法、學過進位，他自己說出了「位數」。

我看到一個人，用他自己原有的知識，教會自己一個新詞！這是多麼棒的一件事啊，學習不是只有「背」，完全是可以「主動」，像「再生能源」一樣發生！

Sumerian⋯⋯「蘇美人」會跑進教室大喊，

我都還沒意識過來，他就說：「Sumerian 就是蘇美人啦！」即便沒查字典，但看 ian 這個字根，答案應該沒錯。

'Hey-quit it! That's my idea!'

嘿，停！這是我的點子！ 

這段第二遍讀完之後，我們已經完全懂了，不論是生字還是整段內容。

Mr. Z 用這個例子讓 Greg 了解：That's the way ideas work - they spread.。而且 Maura 沒有偷，她用「她的方法」來使用這個點子，Greg 不該生氣，如果真要有什麼感覺，那也應該是 flatterd，被稱讚、被附和了。

今天唸完英文一樣感到非常滿足。看到兒子自己教會自己，也和他一起經歷，從一段不懂的文字，透過回頭、一句一句慢慢來，從迷霧到看清楚的過程。
